Niš is the largest city in southeastern Serbia and the seat of the Nišava Administrative District. According to the last census from 2022, the area of the city of Niš, i.e. the city municipality of Niš has 249,816 inhabitants, while the city of Niš itself has 183,164 inhabitants, so in terms of population, Niš is the third largest city in Serbia (after Belgrade and Novi Sad). The geographical position of Niš made it a strategically important and thus an attractive city for many invaders. The influence of different peoples who lived on the territory of today's city of Niš can be seen in the city's cultural heritage, primarily in its architectural diversity. The traffic infrastructure on the territory of Niš makes it a crossroads of land and air traffic in the Balkans, (especially due to the intensive traffic to Turkey and Greece) and because the international airport Constantine the Great, which bears the international designation INI, is located on the territory of Niš. It is an important economic, university, cultural, religious and political center of Serbia.
