Negotin is a town settlement in Serbia in the municipality of Negotin in the Bor District. Negotin is located near the triple border of Serbia, Romania and Bulgaria. The name Negotin was first recorded in the 16th century. The place had no importance until the 18th century, when it became an important military stronghold. In 1833, Negotin became a permanent part of Serbia, and from then on, its rapid development began, which lasted until the beginning of the First World War. Among other things, Negotin is also known as the birthplace of the composer Stevan Mokranjac. It is considered that Negotin is a settlement that was created at the time of the fall of the Serbian despotism under the rule of the Turks in 1459. However, the oldest known written historical sources about Negotin and Krajina come from the Turkish census books of the Vidin sandjak from the 16th century. In 1530, based on these sources, Negotin was a small village with 55 houses. According to the latest census from 2022, about 29,062 inhabitants live in the municipality of Negotin, while about 18,000 inhabitants live in the settlement of Negotin.
