Subotica

in Subotica

Subotica was mentioned in written documents for the first time on May 7, 1391, but the place is certainly older. It was established that people lived in this area 3000 years ago. The fate of Subotica was largely determined by its position on the road between Europe and Asia, and historically on the border of two conflicting powers: Hungary and Turkey. In frequent and large migrations, many peoples came to this military territory: Serbs, Hungarians, Germans, Slovaks, Jews, Bunjevci, Greeks... The masters changed often, as did the names of the city. Since the first one - Zabatka in 1391 - more than two hundred names have been changed, but the most characteristic names are Szent-Maria, Maria-Theresiopolis, Maria Theresienstadt, Szabadka and Subotica. The city of Subotica is located in the north of the Republic of Serbia, along the border with the Republic of Hungary, at 46 05' 55'' north latitude and 19 39' 47'' east longitude. The average altitude of Subotica is 114m, 40m above the level of the Tisza near Kanjiža and 32m above the level of the Danube near Baja. International road E-75 passes by Subotica. It is 10 km to the Kelebija border crossing, and 30 km to Horgoš. To the north of the city is a fertile sandy area with vineyards and orchards, and to the south is arable land. Subotica has 101,000 inhabitants, while according to the last census of 2022, the entire area of Subotica has 124,679 inhabitants.
