The municipality of Arilje is located in the western part of the Republic of Serbia, within the Zlatibor District. It is located between the basins of the Moravica, Veliki and Mali Rzav rivers, on a total area of 349 km2. This is a hilly-mountainous area, with altitudes from 330 to 1382 meters. Arilje, as the administrative center of the municipality, is located at an altitude of 342 m, at the mouth of the Rzava and Moravica rivers. The municipality of Arilje has good connections with major economic, cultural and administrative centers in Serbia, especially with Uzice, Čačak and Belgrade. It is 195 km from Belgrade, 38 km from Užice, 47 km from Čačak. Arilje is a city with a long history. There are numerous evidences of the duration of life in these areas, since prehistoric times, but the most preserved traces of the medieval Serbian state. In the past, the Roman road to Ivanjica led through the Moravica valley. Refugees from Thessaly found refuge here in the 11th century, and the relics of their saint St. Achilia, laid in the existing Christian temple. In 1219, Sava Nemanjić declared Moravice (present-day Arilje) the seat of the Moravian bishopric. In this place, a Serbian Orthodox bishop, and later a metropolitan, reigned. The new cathedral church of the Moravian bishopric was built by King Dragutin Nemanjić between 1283 and 1296. The king's endowment was named the Church of St. Achillia, after the saint from Larisa, has been the symbol of Aril for more than seven centuries. By decree of Prince Milan Obrenović, Arilje was declared a small town in 1880. The beginning of the 20th century marked the intensive development of crafts and fruit growing. Today, Arilje is a town of raspberries and private economy, but also a place with good conditions for the development of tourism. According to the latest census from 2022, the municipality of Arilje has about 17,153 inhabitants, of which about 7,000 live in the settlement of Arilje.
