Požarevac is a city in northeastern Serbia, 82 kilometers from Belgrade. It is geographically located between four rivers: Danube, Velika Morava, Mlava and Peka. It is surrounded by the fertile Stig plain. It covers an area of 580 square kilometers. Above the town there is a hill and memorial park Čačalica. The nearest larger town is Smederevo and in terms of population, these two towns are similar, while Požarevac is much larger. The town was mentioned for the first time in 1476, and became known after the Peace of Požarevac concluded in 1718 between Austria and Turkey. The first school and one of the oldest in Serbia was founded within the local Orthodox church in 1733 (today it bears the name of Dositej Obradović). In the vicinity of Požarevac there are a large number of significant archaeological sites, the largest of which is the Viminacium in the vicinity of Kostolac.
