Gornji Milanovac is a town settlement in Serbia in the municipality of Gornji Milanovac in the Moravica district. It is located between the mountains Rudnik in the north and Vujan in the south. Gornji Milanovac covers the basin around the river Despotovica, which rises below Rudnik and flows to the south. The town is located along the western side of the European road E763, between Ljig and Čačak. The climate is continental, but very cold; the city ranks right behind Sjenica in terms of the number of cold days. The place where the city began to develop was called Divlje polje. By decree of Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević in 1853, the construction of a new settlement began, which was named Despotovica after the river. The settlement was called Despotovica until 1859, when Miloš Obrenović returned to the princely throne for the second time. Then, in memory of his older brother, Milan Obrenović, duke of Rudnik, he changed his name to Gornji Milanovac by a special decree of Despotovica. The city is widely known for the place Takovo, where Miloš Obrenović started the Second Serbian Uprising in 1815. According to the last census from 2022, the municipality of Gornji Milanovac has about 39,244 inhabitants, while the settlement of Gornji Milanovac has about 25,000 inhabitants.
