Dimitrovgrad is a town settlement in Serbia in the municipality of Dimitrovgrad in the Pirot district. It is 20 km away from Pirot in the upstream direction to the east. It is located almost on the border with the neighboring Republic of Bulgaria. It is about 65 km from Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. The city is located at 463 m above sea level in the foothills of Vidlič Mountain and the foothills of the northern slopes of Greben Mountain. The old name of the city is Caribrod, and it got its current name in 1951, by decree of the then Government of the FNRJ, in honor of Georgi Dimitrov, the Bulgarian president. In 2008, councilors of the Dimitrovgrad Municipal Assembly launched an initiative to return the old name - Caribrod. The decision to change the name was voted (25 out of 28 councilors voted for it), but it was not implemented. The surroundings of Dimitrovgrad consist of a hilly - mountainous landscape elongated in the direction southwest - northeast. Large forms of relief extend perpendicularly to the direction of the territory.
