Vranje is a city in the south of Serbia, the seat of the Pčinj district. Vranje is located in the Vranjska basin, on the Vranjska River, not far from its confluence with South Morava. It was mentioned for the first time in 1093, and it became part of the Serbian state in 1207. It was conquered by the Turks in 1455. During the Turkish era, it was the crossroads of the roads from Serbia to Macedonia and Bulgaria, an important place on the Moravian-Vardar road, known for the production of weapons and iron objects and for quality tow. In 1878, it was liberated from the Turks. Vranje is the birthplace of Bora Stanković. After the Second World War, it was an industrial center, with factories for footwear, textiles, metallurgy and furniture.
