The fertile areas of Velika Morava and Resava were inhabited since ancient times. The Thracians first lived in those areas, who were conquered by the Romans and founded their province of Upper Moesia. Slavs settled early in Resava, where they were known as Braničevci and Moravians. The period since the Serbian despotism, when this region experienced enviable economic and cultural prosperity, is particularly important for Resava. The first written historical records about Resava villages date back to the 15th century. Svilajnac was first mentioned in 1467, as the village "Svilajnac with 30 houses". It is believed that the village got its name Svilajnac because its inhabitants were engaged in breeding silkworms and producing silk.
