Ljig is located in the western part of Šumadija. About 8 kilometers south of Ljig is the mountain Rajac, and 27 kilometers southeast is the mountain Rudnik. The 48.9 km long Ljig river flows through Ljig, which is also the largest tributary of the Kolubara river. The recorded history of Ljig begins in 1911, when the railway between Lajkovac and Gornji Milanovac was built. However, a 15th-century sarcophagus was found in the ruins of the Vavedenje monastery, which is believed to belong to Serbian despots Stefan Branković or Đurđ Branković. According to legend, Đurđe's wife Jerina is also buried here. According to the last census from 2022, Ljig has about 3,000 inhabitants, while the entire municipality with associated villages has about 10,736 inhabitants.
