In the northern part of Banat, in the immediate vicinity of the Serbian-Romanian border, lies the large municipality of Kikinda, the center of the economic and social life of this part of Vojvodina. In the municipality there are populated places: Mokrin, Iđoš, Bashaid, Bikač, Banatska Topola, Rusko Selo, Novi Kozarci, Banatsko Veliko Selo, Nakovo and Sayan. According to archaeological findings, there were old settlements at the place of Kikinda, and in 1423, the place of Nađ Kekenj was mentioned as a property of the Hungarian kings. In the 18th century, Kikinda was the center of the district, and in 1893 it received the status of a free royal city. During World War II, in 1941, an armed resistance was organized in this area, in which the partisan units of Kikind, Mokrinski and Dragutinova were active. According to the latest census from 2022, the municipality of Kikinda has 49,691 inhabitants, while the city of Kikinda has 39,000 inhabitants.
