Žitorađa is a municipality and settlement in southeastern Serbia, located in the Toplica District, not far from the city of Prokuplje. It lies in a mixed flatland and mountainous area with favorable conditions for agriculture and livestock breeding, which form the basis of the local economy. The first written records of the settlement date back to the Middle Ages, and throughout history, Žitorađa developed as a local administrative, commercial, and cultural center. According to the latest census, the Žitorađa municipality has around 16,000 inhabitants. The majority are Serbs, while minority communities are present in smaller numbers. The population is distributed between the central settlement of Žitorađa and surrounding villages. Demographic trends show a stable population in the town center, while rural areas have experienced a slight decline. Žitorađa is known for preserving local traditions, cultural heritage, and customs. Agriculture, livestock breeding, and small businesses form the basis of the local economy, while tourism is gradually developing thanks to the natural beauty of the surrounding mountainous and flatland areas. Today, Žitorađa also offers modern facilities for living and recreation, making it an attractive destination for both visitors and local residents.
