Žitište is a municipality and settlement in northern Serbia, located in the South Banat District of Vojvodina, not far from Zrenjanin. It lies in a flat area with fertile fields suitable for agriculture and livestock breeding, which form the basis of the local economy. The first written records of the settlement date back to the 15th century, and throughout history, Žitište developed as a local administrative, commercial, and cultural center. According to the latest census, the Žitište municipality has around 14,000 inhabitants. The majority are Serbs, while minority communities, mainly Hungarians and Roma, are also present. The population is distributed between the central settlement of Žitište and surrounding villages. Demographic trends show a stable population in the town center, while rural areas have experienced a slight decline. Žitište is known for preserving local traditions, cultural heritage, and customs. Agriculture, livestock breeding, and small businesses form the foundation of the local economy, while tourism is gradually developing thanks to the natural beauty of the surrounding area. Today, Žitište also offers modern facilities for living and recreation, making it an attractive destination for both visitors and local residents.
