The town of Zaječar is located in the central part of the Timočka Krajina and includes the Zaječar Basin, the eastern part of the Crnorečka and the northern parts of the Knjaževačka Basin, as well as the southern parts of the Negotinsk Krajina. The territory of the municipality is bounded: from the north by the slopes of Mount Deli Jovan, from the east and southeast by the slopes of Stara Planina, which is the state border with Bulgaria, in the south and southwest by Lasovačka Planina as a branch of Mount Tupižnica, and in the west by Ježevica and the branches of Veliki Krs. The area of the municipality of Zaječar is 1,069 km2 (about 15% of the area of Timočka Krajina). The oldest known inhabitants of these regions were the Tribals, after them the Mezis are mentioned in this area, and the Timahs are also mentioned in the Timoka valley, but nothing is known about them except their name. The Slavs who settled in these regions were called Timočani, and the first direct news about the Timočani refers to the year 818, when they were already considered a formed Slavic group, and in the same year they broke away from the Bulgarians. The city of Zaječar has about 40,000 inhabitants, and the entire urban area of Zaječar has about 48,521 inhabitants according to the latest census from 2022.
