Žabalj is a municipality and settlement in northern Serbia, located in the South Bačka District, near the city of Novi Sad. It lies in the flatlands of Vojvodina, on the banks of the Tisa River, giving it significant natural and agricultural value. The first written records of the settlement date back to the 16th century, and throughout history, it developed as an important local administrative and economic center, especially in agriculture and livestock breeding. According to the latest census, the Žabalj municipality has around 20,000 inhabitants. The majority are Serbs, while minority communities, mainly Hungarians and Roma, are also present. The population is distributed between the central settlement of Žabalj and smaller villages within the municipality. Demographic trends show a stable population in the central area, while rural areas have experienced a slight decline. The Žabalj municipality is known for preserving local traditions, cultural events, and customs.
