Svrljig (until 1904 Derven) is a town settlement in Serbia in the municipality of Svrljig in the Nišav district. Svrljig was a medieval fortress that was mentioned for the first time in 1019 in the charter of the Byzantine Emperor Basil II of Macedonia (976-1025). Its remains are located above the Svrljiški Timok gorge, between the present-day towns of Niševac and Varoš, north of the present-day town of Svrljig. In 1871, the center of the Svrljig County was transferred from Niševac to Derven, which received the status of a small town on December 9, 1904, and on that occasion its name was officially changed to Svrljig. About 7,000 inhabitants live in the settlement of Svrljig, while according to the last census from 2023, the municipality of Svrljig has close to 10,891 inhabitants.Would you like your company to be in our business catalogue?
