Novo Brdo is a mining center and a former medieval town that developed over the centuries from the suburbs of the fortifications of the same name, the ruins of which still remain in the area today. Novo Brdo is located north of the town of Gnjilani on Velika Planina and is located between the Novobrdska and Kriva rivers and the source of Prilepnica. This name also includes the area surrounding this town in the basin of the above-mentioned two rivers as well as the mountainous environment in their vicinity. Near the ruins in Novo Brdo you can find many remains of old mining settlements and mining activities of that time. In In the 15th century, these mines were particularly famous for the production of precious glam silver (lat. name argentum de glam), which could contain up to 33% gold. At that time, merchants from Dubrovnik persistently tried to buy this silver at the price of ordinary, in order to then refine gold from it themselves for a large profit. Records and data from this time record that the Novi Brda mines produced between 5-6 tons of silver. Novo Brdo se at that time, it was also considered one of the safest places in the diocese of Lipjan, so the metropolitans of Lipjan often stayed there, hiding from the Turkish threat. Since the 1981 census, the majority of the population in this settlement are Albanians.
