Thanks to precious metals, gold and silver, the area of Kučevo and its surroundings, the river Pek and its tributaries and the surrounding coast, has been known since ancient times. Some data say that the Argonauts were still looking for the golden fleece on the banks of this gold-bearing river. The first known name of the settlement (then a Roman fort that stored gold, silver and iron obtained in a nearby mine) is Guduskum and is associated with 128 AD, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, who visited this mine in 173 AD. In the suburbs of this Roman fort, a settlement named Kučevo will emerge centuries later. Today's Kučevo is the administrative, economic, political and cultural center of the municipality of Kučevo. Exploitation and processing of wood, mineral resources and mineral deposits, along with animal husbandry, as the leading branch of agriculture, are the main support of the economic development of this region.
