Kostolac is located in the Peripannon part of northeastern Serbia, where the Požarevačka greda, the northernmost spur of the hills east of Velika Morava, descends to the banks of the Danube and joins the fertile Podunavlje, Pomoravlje and Stig. The peripheral parts of the city are located along the right bank of the Danube and on the banks of the Dunavac, which is 90 km from Belgrade. Kostolac was first mentioned in documents in 1380. The old mining settlement was created in the second half of the 19th century. Novi Kostolac began to be built in 1942. It is 11 kilometers from Požarevac, and 90 kilometers from Belgrade. The population structure consists of a wealth of 26 nations and ethnic groups. That variety was created by the arrival of people from all over the mining town that needed labor.
