According to the testimony of the latest archaeological findings, on the coastal part of Kanjiža (today: Ribarski trg), there are traces of human settlements starting from the Bronze Age, while the most ancient traces of humans on the territory of the municipality, in Trešnjevac, lead us to the Stone Age (Neolithic). According to the charter sources, Kanjiža was probably a royal possession, which in a charter dated to 1093 is claimed to belong to the Benedictine abbey in Pannonhalma. According to that charter, this property, located "next to the mouth of the Cnesa stream", was donated to the Benedictine monastery, together with the pond called Miruth, by King Solomon (1066-1074). Six charters from the period 1093-1240 are still kept in the archives of the main Benedictine abbey in Panonhalma. year, which refer to Kanjiža. 10,000 inhabitants live in the settlement of Kanjiža, while the entire municipality of Kanjiža has 20,520 inhabitants according to the last census of 2022.
