Irig is a municipality and settlement in Srem, northern Serbia, located near Fruška Gora and the town of Ruma. It lies in a mixed flatland and hilly area with fertile fields suitable for agriculture, viticulture, and fruit growing. The first written records of the settlement date back to the Middle Ages, and throughout history, Irig developed as a local administrative, cultural, and trade center. According to the latest census, the Irig municipality has around 14,000 inhabitants. The majority are Serbs, while minority communities, mainly Croats and Hungarians, are present in smaller numbers. The population is distributed between the central settlement of Irig and surrounding villages. Demographic trends show a stable population in the town center, while rural areas have experienced a slight decline. Irig is known for preserving local traditions, cultural heritage, and customs, especially those related to viticulture and festivals connected to Fruška Gora. Agriculture, livestock breeding, and small businesses form the basis of the local economy, while tourism and wine production contribute to economic development.
