Vodnjika is a traditional Serbian folk drink, most commonly used in the Užice region.
It is made exclusively from unsprayed wild fruit and forest fruits. Water that is not chlorinated is added – spring water or filtered water.
That’s why real, authentic vodnjika has a slightly sour taste.
It is primarily made from wild apples, wild pears, and juniper berries, which together make up to about 50% of all the fruit used. After that, rosehip, blackthorn/sloe, hawthorn, and other forest fruits are added according to preference.
The fruit makes up to 50% of the container in which vodnjika is prepared, water is added to cover it, and the whole mixture ferments for about 25 days.
This drink can be used throughout the entire winter.
It is recommended to drink one glass of vodnjika in the morning and one in the evening, and after pouring out one glass, add the same amount of fresh water back into the container.
That’s why in the beginning the drink has a slightly more sour taste.
